EMDR Therapy in North Carolina

In-person in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Wilmington & Online Statewide

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, research-supported therapy for healing trauma. At North Carolina Therapy Professionals (NCTP), we offer EMDR as part of our trauma treatment services—blending proven techniques with a compassionate, relational approach.

Whether you’re seeking help for PTSD, Complex PTSD (CPTSD), or other trauma-related symptoms, our EMDR-trained therapists provide personalized care both in person and online across North Carolina.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a structured therapy that helps people process distressing memories and emotional wounds. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—often eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—to support the brain’s natural ability to heal from trauma.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to go into detail about the traumatic event. Instead, it focuses on helping your brain and nervous system reprocess how the event is stored, so it no longer feels as triggering or overwhelming.

What EMDR Treatment

EMDR is effective for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Complex trauma (CPTSD)

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Sexual or physical assault

  • Medical trauma

  • Grief and complicated loss

  • Anxiety, panic, or phobias

  • Shame and self-worth issues

  • Attachment wounds from early relationships

Many of our clients have experienced trauma in important relationships across the lifespan—including in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood—and EMDR can be a powerful tool for healing those wounds.

Our EMDR Approach at NCTP

At NCTP, we believe that healing happens in relationship. That’s why we integrate EMDR into a relational, trauma-informed therapy process, rather than using it as a standalone technique.

Our therapists create a supportive, emotionally attuned space that prioritizes safety, consent, and collaboration at every stage. Before beginning EMDR, we work together to ensure:

  • A strong therapeutic alliance

  • Solid coping and grounding skills

  • A clear understanding of the EMDR process

  • A pace that feels right for your nervous system

Many of our therapists are trained not only in EMDR but also in complementary modalities like AEDP, CPT, IFS and attachment-based therapy, allowing us to adapt treatment to your unique needs and history.
